Well, I am an Education consultant operating in the space of Media, Entertainment, and Design industry for over a decade. Times have passed and we are encountering the next wave of revolution of Artificial Intelligence & Machine learning. Yes, its impact has witnessed the ecosystem that we exist in. So, is this change a threat or blessing in disguise?
For one thing, what I have realized is the fact that if there is one thing that is constant it's “CHANGE “. AI as the name suggests is Intelligence of Artificial nature.
One of the questions that I have encountered frequently from my customers is, “would AI replace designers”? Is there a possibility??? Is it real? Is AI going to take over the functions/job role of a designer?
India in 2004
To answer this question to the fullest of my knowledge, let me take you back to the year 2004, where Adobe had launched their user version of Application level software in India. This opened an era of digital communication.
The ecosystem was represented by artists through the conventional brush and paint format. With the introduction of Software, the market showed a strong inclination towards digitally designed visual formats of communication that were more impressive, time-bound, and affordable. The consequence of this change had led to mass job losses among local artisans and people who depended on this traditional space. The challenge for them was to either shape up or ship out.
Remembering: Instances of Change
If it was the tools that changed the way during our agrarian era and the machines during the industrial era, it’s definitely going to be AI who will change the future course of things to come.
One of the realities in any century that is constant is Change. One of the biggest fears that have engulfed man has also been change. Humanity has seen change as a constant threat. This can always be related to his habits and constant conditioning that has developed through years. I remember reading a story about people running out from their houses when electricity was introduced. They feared that their house would get burned. I do remember when people were hesitant to board a train during its first trial run.
AI as a Collaborator, Not a Competitor
One of the fascinating changes in the AI format of things is the speed with which the tool is evolving. This revolution is unlike any other formats of change that we had encountered in the past. The tool has to be seen as a collaborator and not a threat/competition.
AI as a tool in the creative space has only helped in expanding the capabilities of any designer. From ideation, validation to execution, the tool has helped develop effective solutions to problems. It has led to helping designers focus on the core problems and has left tasks that are of repetitive nature for AI to validate and solve.
India experienced the first set of AI during the times of COVID. From fashion stores introducing the formats of Virtual shopping (Immersive technology) to a full scale of digital buying formats, it elevated the experience of customers choosing multiple formats of purchase. AI as a tool has helped several sectors of industries in India understand and serve customers closely.
Let’s see what AI cannot do and what humans ace at
While AI has its strengths, there are areas where it simply cannot replace human capabilities.
- Lacks Intuition & Common Sense: AI can analyze data but cannot grasp abstract concepts or instincts.
- Limited Creativity: AI generates ideas based on data but lacks the originality and human touch that make designs unique.
- Absence of Empathy: Understanding emotions and human behavior is beyond the scope of AI.
- Ethical Judgment: AI cannot make moral or ethical decisions based on context.
- Adaptability Issues: AI struggles with new scenarios outside its training data.
Design as a discipline, in its very nature, is all about coming up with effective solutions. It poses various challenges and encounters multiple behavioral understandings and challenges. Besides technology, design consists of several skill sets which are of higher cognition. It consists of observation, critical thinking, empathy, eye for detail, and problem-solving which are personal and beyond the reach of any artificial tool that can address and solve.

Is fear your servant or master?
AI is only a tool like any other tool that helps us in bringing out effective solutions in the quickest time possible. It’s a fact that this tool cannot be avoided and has to be lived with. The tool in my personal understanding has led to losses of several jobs that are of repetitive nature. The tool has to be seen as a collaborator and not as competition. It should be used in all its glory towards enhancing the best possible solution in all aspects for the design industry. However, the downside is in its algorithms. Several countries have come out with policies that specifically define the limitations of power that AI can have during human engagements. What we as human beings have and what a technology does not is “Consciousness” during our decision & in the process of engagement.
