NIFT Entrance Exam 2023 Highlights:

  • NIFT exam 2023 was conducted on February 5. There were two shifts:
    • 10:00 am to 12:30 pm
    • 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm
  • NIFT 2023 question paper consisted of 120 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) with a total of 400 marks.
  • The MCQs were divided into three sections:
    • Section I: General Aptitude (100 marks)
    • Section II: Drawing Ability (100 marks)
    • Section III: Innovation and Entrepreneurship (100 marks)
  • The question paper was of moderate difficulty level.
  • The pass percentage for the exam was 50%.

NIFT Exam Syllabus 2024:

DESIGN APTITUDE TEST

DAT or “Design Aptitude Test” as it is popularly known consists of topics that tests the creativity ability of the student in the NIFT entrance exam. DAT is a qualifier examination where it checks if you have the right amount of aptitude, interest, and passion to be a part NIFT programs.

Let’s look at the topics in detail for the written examination:

The “General Ability Test” which is a Computer Based Test (CBT) for Bachelors of Design in NIFT. This test is conducted for 120 minutes which has 100 questions.

The sections that are available in the NIFT DAT exam (Bachelors of Design) question paper are:

1. Communication Ability with a total of 25 questions. This includes questions on Synonyms, antonyms, Words with corresponding meanings, Singular & Plural, one-word substitutes, Idioms & Phrases, correct spellings, etc. It would be advisable to revisit your 10th-class English grammar.

2. English Comprehension consists of 25 questions. This is nothing but to comprehend a situation from a given passage.

3. Quantitative ability consists of 20 questions. These consist of Multiplication, Division, Fractions, Percentage, Rate of Interest, Work & Task, Ratio & Proportion & Distance. A revisit to your 10th and 12th class maths is recommended here.

4. Analytical Ability consists of 15 questions. Analytical Ability is nothing but your ability to draw inference & logic from the given information.

5. General Knowledge consists of 15 questions. This section is in testing of candidates’ ability of general knowledge and current affairs. This section requires students on cultivating extensive reading habits with respect to Fashion & design happenings.

Captions, brand names, logo identification of various fashion brands, history are all some of the key learning take aways that shall help you in updation of the same.

Now, Lets look at what are the sections that are available in NIFT DAT (Bachelors of Technology) question paper:

The NIFT GAT in Bachelors of Fashion Technology is conducted for 180 minutes with 150 questions.

Topics consist of Communication & Comprehension ability with 45 questions, Quantitative ability with 30 questions, Analytical & Logical ability with 25 questions, Gk & Current affairs with 25 questions & case studies with 25 questions.

CREATIVE ABILITY TEST

For the NIFT Creative Ability Test as the name suggests it tests the creative ability of the studnet. Also the observation power in concept development, design ability of the candidate, illustration skills, innovative use of colour. This part is a pure paper and pencil test.

A. A typical example of the question asked in the NIFT CAT exam is:

Design a ladies bag or cover of a brochure by taking inspiration from a crafts village environment.

Note: Here there are specific instructions given such as you would need to use one full page for design, not to use sketch pens or markers, use only dry color pencils, and you would lose marks if the design work is not colored.

B. Another example is:

Draw a computer fair in detail or a bag exhibition.

This refers to scene drawing with specific instructions to use only one page and to use only colored drawing pencils.

C. One more example of the question is:

Draw a sofa set in a 5 star hotel/an air conditioner for a room.

RESERVATION OF SEATS UNDER EACH QUOTA FOR THE PROGRAM

Entrance Exam for Masters in NIFT

Masters of Design consists of both CAT & GAT along with personal Interviews. The creative ability test consists of assessing Illustration skills, Visualisation skills, aesthetic sense besides observation, clarity of concepts, and designing skills. The examination for Master of Design is more serious in nature and they expect you to have the necessary competitive skills. The GAT on the other hand is a 120 minutes of question paper with 120 questions. Some of the topics include communication ability with 30 questions, English comprehension with 30 questions, Quants with 20 questions, Analytical ability with 25 questions, GK & Current affairs with 15 questions with negative marks that add icing to the cake.

Masters of Fashion Technology in NIFT is a 180 min CBT that consists of 150 questions. It includes 45 questions on communication ability and English comprehension, 30 questions on quants, 25 questions on analytical and logical ability, 25 questions on gk and general awareness with 25 questions on case study.

Masters of Fashion Management in NIFT is an examination consisting of 180 minutes with 150 questions. More emphasis is on communication ability & English comprehension followed by case studies with 40 questions, along with quants, logical ability and gk, and general awareness.

PI OR PERSONAL INTERVIEW is confined to Masters Examination only. The personal Interview is for candidates who have successfully cleared the written examination. Some of the parameters that will be evaluated by the panel during PI will be their career orientation, Aptness and aptitude for the course, overall achievements in academics and co-curricular activities, communication skills, creative and lateral thinking general awareness, and ability to solve problems creatively. Group discussions are also held and NIFT has the right to modify these steps at any point in time

What is a Situation Test?

Situation test is the 2nd round of tests in the NIFT entrance exam for all the UG design programs. Students who qualify for the first round of examination attend the situation test. The situation test is a 2-hour hands-on examination that evaluates the skills of the candidate in terms of material handling and innovation with a given set of materials.

The candidate will be asked to make a model and will be evaluated based on the parameters such as space visualisation, innovative and creative use of the given material, composition of elements, color scheme, construction skill, and overall presentation skill.

The student will also have to pen down the thought process behind the creative outcome in the English language. Also, note that the candidate will get disqualified if he mentions his name or any information that reveals personal information of any nature.

How many stages of examination are there in NIFT?

Is the NIFT exam difficult to crack?

On the surface of it, the NIFT entrance exam seems difficult to crack. But looks can be deceiving provided you were to shed your perception and look into reality. For one, like all All India Examination one needs a definitive interest, drive, willpower, resilience, and a meticulous amount of preparation in cracking this exam. The key to this situation is to practice a lot and follow a timetable. For example, for candidates preparing by themselves, it’s to be noted that you start with your difficult areas in terms of question paper and work your way upwards. How can I start preparing for the NIFT examination?

A good way to begin will be to start with the previous year's question papers. This will help in understanding the topics covered and the syllabus. Look at the weightage of the scores between the CAT & GAT. Mostly students face difficulty in the drawing part. For example, memory drawing, compositions etc. I would suggest you to start with basic line drawing and improve confidence in lines.

Second thing is to understand the various shapes. Try connecting shapes with objects. Do not focus on the speed in which you complete, that will come with practice. But the emphasis here is to practice vigorously. Once you are done with the basics practice compositions with right ratios and proportions. Ensure that you do evaluate your sketches with someone who has had the experience of clearing the examination.

For the theory part practice maximum question papers. Compare your answers with the answer bank available. Focus on the topic that you find difficult. A must for every student is to start reading newspaper on a regular basis, refer online platforms on latest happening in the world of fashion and familiarise yourself with brands, logos and slogans. What is NIFT Exam?

NIFT entrance exam is an All India Common entrance exam conducted once in a year by NIFT in association with AIMA for all the regular courses offered at 18 Campuses of NIFT. The student needs to successfully clear the examination to secure a seat in one of the colleges. The examination is conducted in 2 stages. The first stage is the written round that is called DAT (Design Aptitude Test) that is conduced in the month of february. All students who successfully clear the DAT Examination appear for the second stage of the exam called Situation Test/Group discussion/Personal Interview. The second stages of examination is conducted in the month of may. The combinations of exam vary according to the discipline that one intends to apply. Examinations are conducted separately for Design /Technology & Management disciplines.

The objective of the NIFT Examination is to test the necessary aptitude, skills, interest, passion and competence required for the program. Topics include Sketching, Aptitude, Reasoning Skills, Communication & Comprehension, GK & General Awareness etc. The examination includes subjective and objective type questions with negative marking. The maximum marks that one can score is 100. The duration of examination is 3 hours.
