What is CEED?

CEED stands for Common Entrance Exam for Design, an all-India level exam conducted annually. It is organized jointly by all IITs and the Indian Institute of Sciences (IISc). The examination is hosted by the Industrial Design Center at IIT Bombay on behalf of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.

What is this test all about?

CEED is a descriptive test designed to assess students' logical, creative, observation, and drawing skills. These skills are tested specifically for admission into various design courses offered by participating institutions.

Eligibility Criteria for CEED Application

There is no age limit for appearing in the CEED exam, and candidates can take the exam any number of times. However, it is essential to check if you meet the eligibility criteria of individual institutions before applying. Additionally, a separate application must be submitted to the participating institutions along with your CEED score. Admissions are granted upon successful completion of interviews and studio tests conducted by these institutions.

Eligibility for CEED Examination:

• The candidate must have passed a Degree/Diploma/Post Graduate Degree program of 4 years or 3+2 years after 10+2.
• Alternatively, candidates who have completed the GD Arts Diploma Program (10+5 level) are eligible.

The MDes programme at CPDM is spread over four semesters and two summer terms, contains a challenging mix of courses and projects in user-research, creativity, advanced engineering, aesthetics, ergonomics, materials, manufacturing, design methodology, CAD, CAE, marketing and design for X, etc., to train students in developing products that blend the soft and the hard to solve the problem and wow the user. The programme takes engineers and architects as input through a most challenging design aptitude test called DAT, and handpicks the best for grooming and training through its knowledge, skill and reflection-based curriculum that prepare them to lead existing practice and create new practices in design. Students from CPDM have led Design practice with distinction eg : Designing the first Indigenous car from Suzuki (A-Star) or the Award winning TVS AKULA ...winning major award winning Design prices.

Bachelors Degree in Engineering/ Architecture and with a valid GATE/CEED score are eligible to apply. Selection is based on the DAT followed by an Interview conducted at the centre.

Industrial Design Center (IIT, Mumbai)

IDC has academic programs in the areas of Industrial Design, Communication Design, Interaction Design, Animation & Mobility Design.

Eligibility Criteria

Pass the CEED Exam & qualify the Departmental Test and Interview conducted by IIT, Mumbai. The test consists of a Studio Test followed by Interview.

What is a Studio Test in IIT?

Quick assignments are given to test design thinking skills. Challenges in the Studio Test vary from year to year. However, skills in problem-solving, sketching, observation, and model-making are tested. Candidates are expected to carry basic stationery on the day of the studio test.

Industrial Design

The Industrial Design program concentrates on developing skills, knowledge, and attitudes among students to become creative problem-solvers who can effectively and strategically use different design processes and methods. Students learn to correlate technical and ergonomic functions of a product with real human needs. They develop innovative and aesthetic sensibilities into making coherent and appropriate products. Students are encouraged to solve socially relevant issues.

• Bachelor’s Degree in Design/Engineering/Architecture/Interior Design: 10+2+4 years (minimum four-year Bachelor’s course). B.Plan. is considered equivalent to B.Arch.

Communication Design

This course is at an advanced level to create communication design professionals with greater analytical and problem-solving capabilities. Students are given opportunities to learn new skills and advance their level of understanding. They can specialize in areas like typography, information visualization, interaction design, video/film making, exhibition design, animation, photography, etc.

Animation

The Animation program in IDC strives to create individuals with expertise who will emerge as leaders to influence the future of Animation. Interaction Design

This program focuses on interactive media, mobile communication applications, interfaces for software applications, interactive gaming, and learning applications. It emphasizes the needs of Indian users and the Indian industry.

Mobility and Vehicle Design
While facing a big challenge in terms of changing lifestyle, environmental issues, and increasing population density, auto companies are strengthening product development functions, including design. International auto majors are setting up design studios in India to meet these challenges. The demand for component design professionals is growing rapidly. The program aims to develop graduates with skills and knowledge to become competent designers for the auto industry in India. Students study transportation and mobility issues along with developments in other countries to find creative solutions.

Eligibility Criteria
1. Bachelor’s Degree in Design/Engineering/Architecture/ Interior Design: 10+2+4 years (minimum four-year Bachelor’s course).

Selection Process
Applicants who qualify CEED and meet eligibility criteria for each stream are eligible to apply.
All applications will be scrutinized to verify eligibility. Applications not conforming to eligibility criteria will be rejected.
A merit list will be prepared based on the CEED marks of eligible candidates, called IDC–CEED merit list.
An Interview Call list will be created for each stream based on the CEED merit list.
The multiplying factor for all categories is 8. For example, if 10 seats are available for General category, 80 candidates will be called for the written test and interview.
The interview and test will carry 100 marks each.
The final score is a combination of CEED marks, written test, and interview with 70% and 30% weightage respectively.
A final merit list will be created based on the total scores and a cutoff will be applied based on category: 50 for General, 45 for OBC(NC), and 33 for SC/ST/PwD candidates.

Master of Design is a program in Industrial Design.

Let’s Discuss the Question Paper

The total duration of the examination is 3 hours. The question paper contains 2 parts:

• Part A: 1 hour
• Part B: 2 hours

Questions for Part A and Part B will appear on the computer. Answers for Part A must be entered on the computer, and answers for Part B will be written in the answer book provided by the invigilator.

Part A:

Part A carries a total of 100 marks. It contains 3 types of questions:

• Numerical Answer type questions
• Multiple Select Questions
• Multiple Choice Questions

Negative marking applies to Multiple Choice Questions. Each correct answer is awarded 2 marks, and each incorrect answer is penalized with -0.6 marks. Scribble pads will be provided for rough work during Part A. These must be returned to the invigilator at the end of the exam.

Part B:

Part B carries 100 marks and contains 8 questions. You may choose to answer any one of them. However, there are 3 mandatory questions that need to be answered. In Part B, color pencils, crayons, sketch pens, etc., may be used unless otherwise specified in the questions.

A Caution:

Charts, graph sheets, tables, calculators, mobile phones, and other electronic gadgets are not allowed in the examination hall.

What are the Syllabus for CEED Exam?

CEED 2018 will be divided into two parts:

Part A:

Part A will have questions related to the following topics:

• Visualization and spatial ability: Pictorial and diagrammatic questions to test the understanding of transformation and/or manipulation of 2D shapes and 3D objects and their spatial relationships.
• Environmental and social awareness: General awareness of environmental factors such as climate, population, water, vegetation, pollution, weather, natural resources, etc., and their implications on the design of products, images, infrastructure, and the environment.
• Awareness of design terminologies: Social and cultural connections with design, history of designed artifacts, and socially responsible and environmentally sustainable design responses. History of art, sculpture, and literature.
• Analytical and logical reasoning: Ability to analyze given information logically and select the most appropriate solutions. Ability to use logic and structured thinking to deduce the most accurate response from a short passage.
• Language and creativity: Ability to understand passages in commonly used English language, think creatively in terms of alternatives, and distinguish innovative options.
• Design thinking and problem-solving: Ability to understand the context, users, and constraints and select the most appropriate solution for a given design problem.
• Observation and design sensitivity: Ability to detect concealed properties in everyday life, think critically about them, and discern subtle differences in visual properties and aesthetic outcomes.

Part B of CEED 2018 will have questions related to the following topics:

• Drawing: Ability to draw products, people, or scenes in proportion with good line quality, composition, proportion, perspective, and shading.
• Creativity: Ability to think out of the box and come up with unique as well as diverse solutions.
• Communication skills: Ability to communicate concepts and ideas clearly with the help of text and visuals.
• Analytical and problem-solving skills: Ability to understand the user and the context, knowledge of properties of materials and processes and their appropriate use in design, originality of solutions, ability to create characters, plots, and stories, etc.
