The data mentioned is based on a survey conducted by CII of 36,337 designers and figures based on sample size of 170 studios surveyed. Below is the percentage of designers associated with various verticals of design:-

  2. b)Graphic Design with 18.09 %
  3. c)Animation + New media Design with 9.64 %
  4. d)Industrial + Automotive & Retail Design with 22.64 %
  5. e)Allied ( toy+ set & exhibition + Design research) 10.94 %
  6. f)Human computer Interaction with 29%

There are approximately 2 -3 lakh designers employed in various fields of design. The new government with its MAKE IN INDIA policy has further fuelled the fire by creating additional jobs in the industry. Majority of the design activity is focused in the four main cities which include Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore & Pune.


The profession of designer was called a minority profession until 1990. The minority profession metamorphosing into mainstream profession in India happened during post 1990 with globalization and liberalization of the Indian economy. The Design vision gains further bhold with India among the only few countries to have formulated and adopted a National Design Policy. Indian Design Council was the vehicle that was constituted to implement the major provisions of National Design Policy. Design education has seen a spurt of growth in the last five years with many private institutions getting initiated with International collaborations, till before 5 years the design landscape had been characterized by a few govt institutions. The change in design education landscape has brought a plethora of choice to many an aspirant for their design study. A fundamental question to any an aspirant who would like to take up design as a career. This can only be realized in understanding your true nature. A true designer is observant, has a quality to connect, he/ she is committed and have skills to represent his/ her visuals or ideas in the form of a sketch or drawing. His/ her skills also extends through painting & creative use of material as well


The many a people who possess the ability to represent their ideas in a piece of paper mistakenly define themselves as good designers. The forefront of it all is to understand the difference between an Art and Design. An artist limits the possibilities of representing a form of visual according to his creative space. Well, a designer looks beyond that scope. If the role of an artist is to inspire a role of a designer is to solve problems. Design thinking as a process is relatively new, and helps in exacting the solutions for a problem. This form of thinking is a human centric process from ideation to execution. This includes identifying the mundane problems and providing issues. An Eg in Indian context would be the kerosene stoves invented way back in 1970 which served the masses before the coming of gas stoves. It did help the “Aam Admi” in preparing food at minimal consumption of fuel. The process of design thinking involves Empathise, Define, Ideate, Prototype & Test. The process of design thinking should also posses comprehending and envisioning capabilities, identifying themselves with the concept and respect for the material they have chosen.

Eligibility includes 12th STD with 50% marks. The candidate can be from any discipline. Entry into Masters of discipline includes minimum 3 -4 years of education from a recognized board or from a technical education recognized by the govt of India.

The procedure for intake in most of the colleges include a written exam combines with a personal interview.


Most of the design colleges train the candidates on the line of Design, Technology and entrepreneurship. The placements from the recognized colleges leads the candidate to have a spring board effect in their career with leading brands in foot wear, clothing & industries alike. The position shall be on the lines of a mid level manager. Earning capacity for any a graduate shall be from 7 lakh – 15 lakh depending on the market situations & Discipline adopted. Recruitment includes online companies, Manufacturers, Design studios, International design houses, Automobile and Allied firms  Many a student also have ventured in the possibility of entrepreneurship over the last few years in the Consulting & Online platforms.
